The central research theme of this Center is the study of signal transduction mechanisms operating in normal or aberrant cells. The problems addressed in the Center are relevant to understand nerve cell function, hormone action, muscle physiology, cellular death mechanisms and cancer. The specific research areas include studies of signal transduction mechanisms involved in calcium signaling, cancer, steroidogenesis, cell death, mineralocorticoid actions in cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, cellular stress response and neurodegenerative diseases.
There are several collaborative projects among FONDAP investigators as well as established collaborations with other investigators from Chile, Argentina, USA, Canada, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Denmark.
This Center places particularly strong emphasis on graduate training. For this purpose, national and international educational activities including courses and workshops are scheduled regularly. Via the implementation of joint thesis projects, designed to investigate signal transduction mechanisms in normal and pathological situations, the Center also offers graduate students new training areas in biomedical and medical sciences.
Through a policy of incorporating young talented scientists, the Center fosters the development in Chile of a future generation of scientists dedicated to biomedical research. It is expected that this new generation will keep up, and eventually will develop further, the high impact research required to solve health-related issues relevant to the country.
The Center: Scientists of excellence for Chile The Center for Molecular Studies of the Cell, CEMC has two major objectives, which fulfill an important role. First, to conduct scientific research of excellence that will result in publications in relevant journals with high impact and, second, advanced human capital training, leading the forefront of scientific and intellectual development in Chile. |
Researchers from the Center receive significant international awards Researchers from the Center for Molecular Studies of the Cell, Sonja Buvinic and Paola Haeger, obtained significant awards for their work at two international congresses in recent months. |
Claudio Hetz , awarded a prestigious international prize Claudio Hetz, member of the Instituto de Ciencias Biomédicas Facultad de Medicina and researcher of the CEMC, was awarded the prize for the most outstanding young scientist granted by the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS). |
